The Buy Tencent Cloud Account page lists two options that answer two different questions. The Tencent Cloud Free Trail Account ($40) is for finding out whether the platform suits you. The Tencent Cloud Pay As you Go Account ($55) is for running something on it. This article sets the two side by side, explains how Tencent Cloud’s Cloud Virtual Machine billing works, and gives a practical rule for choosing between them.
What Tencent Cloud is
Tencent Cloud is a global platform with regions in mainland China and across Asia-Pacific, Europe, North America, South America and the Middle East. Cloud Virtual Machine, usually shortened to CVM, is the compute foundation, with standard, compute-optimised, memory-optimised and IO-optimised families plus GPU instances. Cloud Block Storage attaches to instances, Object Storage holds durable unstructured data, and managed databases, container orchestration, content delivery and security services share the same account. Identity is handled through its access-management service, with AccessKeys as API credentials.
The two options side by side
| Tencent Cloud Free Trail Account | Tencent Cloud Pay As you Go Account | |
|---|---|---|
| Listed price | $40 | $55 |
| Intended for | Evaluation and learning | Ongoing workloads |
| How usage is covered | Trial allowances, then standard rates if a payment method is attached | Billed per usage from the start |
| Ceiling | Bounded by trial terms | Bounded by your budget and quotas |
| Best next step | Prototype, measure, decide | Deploy, monitor, optimise |
Note the source spelling “Free Trail” in the option name; it is the exact listing title.
How the trial account behaves
A trial account exists to let you touch the platform: launch a CVM instance in the region nearest your users, attach a block volume, upload to Object Storage, and see how the console and API feel. Trial allowances follow the provider’s current terms, which set what is included and for how long, so read them in the console rather than assuming. When allowances end, usage continues at standard rates only if a valid payment method is attached; otherwise resources stop. Trial-style options from several providers are compared in free trial cloud accounts compared.
How the pay-as-you-go account behaves
Pay-as-you-go bills each resource for the time it exists at published rates, with no allowance to run out. That sounds more expensive but is actually more predictable: there is no cliff at the end of a trial window, and cost tracks usage from the first hour. Tencent Cloud also offers subscription billing, which prepays a resource for a fixed term; the normal path is to run pay-as-you-go until you know which instances are permanent, then subscribe those. The wider trade-off between usage billing and prepaid balances is in pay-as-you-go accounts vs credit accounts.
A rule for choosing
- You have never used Tencent Cloud and want to test latency to a specific region or the feel of CVM: the Free Trail Account.
- You already know you will run a workload for weeks or months: the Pay As you Go Account, so nothing is built on an allowance that will end.
- You want both: start with the trial, and treat the pay-as-you-go account as the target you migrate to, with infrastructure defined as code so the move is a redeploy rather than a rebuild.
Region choice matters more here than on most platforms
Because the region list spans mainland China and international locations, the first decision after login is where to deploy. Mainland regions give the best latency for users there but involve local regulatory steps for public-facing hosting; international regions do not. Most teams outside China start in an Asia-Pacific region and expand later. The method is in latency and region selection, and a comparison with the other China-rooted global platform is in Alibaba Cloud vs Tencent Cloud accounts.
First steps on either option
- Change the password, enable multi-factor authentication, and rotate or delete any existing AccessKeys.
- Put your own contact and billing details on the account so notices and invoices reach you and the account stays in good standing.
- Set a budget alert before creating anything; pay-as-you-go charges accrue while resources exist.
- Create a scoped sub-user for automation instead of using the root identity.
If something behaves unexpectedly, a login block, a billing hold or a quota error, check the account notices and billing status before assuming a platform fault. Recurring questions are collected in the Tencent Cloud section of the Cloud FAQ.
