Linode and Vultr are two of the most familiar names for developers who want plain virtual machines, hourly billing and a console that stays out of the way. The difference today is context. Linode now operates as part of Akamai Cloud, which brings a broader edge and delivery ecosystem. Vultr remains an independent provider with a direct control plane and a wide spread of locations. The marketplace listings also differ: Linode pairs a $100 credit with a port option, while Vultr offers three credit balances.

What each provider is

Linode began as a developer-friendly VPS provider and is now integrated into Akamai’s cloud platform. An account gives access to Shared CPU, Dedicated CPU, High Memory, Premium and GPU instances plus Block Storage, Object Storage, NodeBalancers, Managed Databases and Linode Kubernetes Engine. The Buy Linode Account page lists the Linode $100 Credit Account at $25 and Linode Open 25 Port at $120.

Vultr is a global provider of virtual private servers, optimized compute, bare metal and GPU instances with hourly billing and a clean control panel. The Buy Vultr Account page lists the Vultr $200 Credit Account at $25, the Vultr $250 Credit Account at $30 and the Vultr $300 Credit Account at $40.

Key differences

  • Credit size at the same entry price. Both providers start at $25 on the marketplace, but the Linode listing carries a $100 balance while the Vultr listing carries $200.
  • Ecosystem. Linode sits inside Akamai, which matters if you plan to combine compute with Akamai’s delivery and security services. Vultr is a standalone platform that integrates through its API and common orchestration tools.
  • Port option. Only Linode lists an Open 25 Port option here. Vultr’s listings are all credit-based.
  • Naming. Linode’s console and product names still carry the Linode identity while documentation increasingly says Akamai Cloud. Vultr’s naming is unchanged.

Account options compared

The table summarizes the five listings. Read the Vultr column as a ladder: the balance rises with each step in listing price. Read the Linode column as two distinct purposes: a low-cost credit account for general use, and a port-oriented account for teams that operate mail delivery. Neither provider lists server-limit tiers on this page.

Fit by use case

  • Solo developer or side project. Either $25 listing works. The Vultr $200 Credit Account stretches further on paper, while the Linode $100 Credit Account suits someone who already knows the Linode console. Our developer cloud accounts guide lists the criteria to weigh.
  • Teams building on Akamai. If delivery, edge or security services from Akamai are part of the plan, the Linode account keeps compute in the same ecosystem. See Linode under Akamai for what changed.
  • Multi-region testing. Vultr’s location spread and hourly billing make it easy to stand up regional test instances and tear them down, and the larger credit balances absorb that experimentation.
  • Self-hosted mail. The Linode Open 25 Port listing is the only port-oriented option here. Operate within Linode’s acceptable-use policy and maintain sender reputation.

Considerations and limitations

Credit balances on both providers apply to eligible usage and expire under each provider’s rules. Some services, including certain GPU plans, may be restricted on newer accounts regardless of balance. Confirm the remaining amount and validity before relying on it, and read credit-backed accounts across providers if a larger balance matters more than the provider.

Both platforms leave operating-system maintenance, backups and monitoring to you. After any account change, update contact and payment details, enable multi-factor authentication and rotate API tokens. The Linode and Vultr FAQ sections answer provider-specific questions.

Questions about this comparison

Why does the Vultr $25 listing carry more credit than the Linode $25 listing?

The listings reflect what each account carries, not a judgment about the providers. The Vultr $200 Credit Account is listed at $25 with a $200 balance, while the Linode $100 Credit Account is listed at $25 with a $100 balance. Compare the balance against your expected first months of usage.

Is Linode still Linode after the Akamai acquisition?

The console, API and core product names still carry the Linode identity, while marketing and documentation increasingly say Akamai Cloud. Instance types, Block Storage, Object Storage and Linode Kubernetes Engine remain available. Our Linode (Akamai) accounts guide covers the practical changes for account holders.

Which Vultr credit account should I pick?

Match the balance to your expected usage. The $200 balance at $25 suits a small test, the $250 balance at $30 a longer project, and the $300 balance at $40 heavier early use. Credits expire under Vultr's rules, so a larger balance only helps if you will use it in time.
